Humanist Association
of Las Vegas and Southern Nevada

HALVASON,
a chapter of the
American Humanist Association,

is a nonprofit, educational organization whose main purpose is to promote
humanism  as a viable alternative to supernatural and theistic belief systems. We serve as a forum for humanists, atheists, agnostics, freethinkers and other like-minded individuals in the Las Vegas area. We promote the Jeffersonian principle of separation of religion and government, the rights of nonreligious people in our society, free inquiry and thought, a naturalistic view of the universe and a reason-based, secular ethical system. Our membership is open to all like-minded people without regard to race, age, gender, sexual orientation, physical disability, or political or other affiliations.

Changes in HALVASON Programming

In January new room reservation policies went into effect at all Las Vegas libraries. Now the public is charged $30 an hour for the use of their rooms, and there is a limit of two hours per meeting. HALVASON has reserved our same speaker meeting room at the Las Vegas Library through June while we look for alternative venues in Las Vegas that can be used free of charge. Unfortunately, we don't feel that we can afford to continue holding our second Sunday forums at the library so we are suspending these until we can find an alternative place to meet. However, we will still be inviting members and friends to join us for dinner and conversation following each of our speaker meetings.

HALVASON Membership Meeting

When  -  Sunday, February 19, 2012 at 2:00 p.m.
Where  -  833 N. Las Vegas Blvd.,  Las Vegas,  NV in the Library Program Room  (across from Cashman Field)
What  -  Speakers: Joseph Peacock and Drew Pruitt. Title of Talk: "Darwin: The Five W's".

Joseph Peacock is a student at UNLV who is currently completing a degree in biology. He is an undergraduate research assistant in an environmental microbiology lab at UNLV, characterizing the ecology of hot springs communities and working to identify organisms and enzymes that may be used to break down cellulose in next-generation biofuel systems. Along with Drew Pruitt, he has debated against creationists and presented the arguments for acceptance of evolution to diverse audiences. Drew Pruitt, while working on his Master's in Education, served as President then Public Events Officer of the Secular Student Alliance at UNLV. He taught biology at Desert Oasis High School, and, with Joe, participated in two evolution/creationism debates at a local Four Square Church. Joseph and Drew's talk, "Darwin: The Five W's", will address the "Who, What, Where, When, Why and How" of Charles Darwin, his journey, writings, and contributions.

Some of you will remember Joseph and Drew from the excellent talk they gave on evolution to our group last year. They graciously agreed to come back this year to help us celebrate Darwin's birth month again by telling us more about his life. Because of the new limits on the amount of time we can use our room at the library, we won't be able to serve birthday cake and punch as we did last year. However, we will have birthday cupcakes available at the end of the meeting that you can take with you when you leave. We hope you will join us for what should be an enjoyable and informative meeting.

HUUMANIST Forum

When  - Sunday,  Feb. 5,  2012 at 12:00 noon
Where  UUCLV Hall - 3616 E. Lake Mead Blvd.,  Las Vegas,  NV.
What  -  Raul Martinez and Mike Jacobson will share the implications arising from their ACLU sponsored challenge to Nevada’s law governing who can perform marriages in the state. This is not only an issue under the banner of “Church-State separation”, it also confronts the reality of being denied status for not embracing a supernatural component.
